BOUNTIFUL — It's the end of an era.

Top Hat Video in Bountiful announced Tuesday that it's closing its doors in December after nearly 40 years in business.

"We are very sad about this closing," a post on Top Hat's Facebook page reads. "It's hard to say goodbye to our beautiful community and the friends we made along the way. We are extremely grateful to our employees and customers that were instrumental in Top Hat's success. Your support and loyalty have meant the world to us."

Now that there are so many ways to consume media digitally, physical media just can't compete, the post states. The final day for rentals will be Dec. 31, 2022.

Over the years, Top Hat has been "a hotspot," for cinematic discovery, date nights, insightful conversations, family outings and connections made over loving or despising a movie, the post continues. There's nothing better, it states, than recommending a movie and then hearing that the customer loved it.

"We have always strived to sell you an experience, rather than the latest new release. Hopefully many of you have felt that," the post reads. "The thrill of browsing or discovering some obscure film by chance and finding hidden gems, or merely talking to customers about their favorite movies are just a handful of things that will be missed. We will never forget the many relationships we have built over the years."

A second Facebook post from Wednesday states that Top Hat will begin selling off its inventory on Black Friday, Nov. 25, and will continue selling it through the end of the year and possibly into January 2023.

"Unloading a massive amount of inventory is a complicated and time-consuming process so we ask that you be patient with us while we go through this transition," that post reads.

KSL reported in 2016 that Top Hat Video began in 1983 under the name Adventureland Video. After several moves and a name change, owners Lee and Lona Earl settled the business into its permanent location at 521 W. 2600 South in Bountiful.
