LAKESIDE, Tooele County — The driver of a pickup truck died and two other people were injured in a head-on crash on Interstate 80 early Saturday, according to authorities.

The Utah Highway Patrol responded to a report of a crash on the freeway near Exit 62 in a remote portion of Tooele County shortly after 3:30 a.m. Authorities say a Dodge pickup truck was traveling east on I-80 when it "veered sharply" to the left off the roadway, across the median and into the westbound lanes, where it collided with a Genesis passenger car.

The driver of the pickup truck, whose name and age were not immediately released, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck during the crash. They were pronounced dead at the scene, according to state troopers.

Troopers added that one occupant of the passenger car was flown to a hospital in critical condition, while another was transported by ambulance to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Their names and ages were also not released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for a few hours, but have since reopened.
