SALT LAKE CITY – One person was injured when the van they were driving collided with the S-Line streetcar in Salt Lake City Friday afternoon, causing the streetcar to derail.
The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. where the S-Line tracks cross Main Street, near 2100 South, in Salt Lake City. The collision forced the Utah Transit Authority to suspend S-Line service between South Salt Lake City and Central Pointe for several hours, according to agency spokesman Carl Arky.
"There was a van that was traveling north on Main Street, and the crossing gate was down and the lights were flashing, and apparently somehow or another the van struck the side of the S-Line train," Arky explained. "As the S-Line train was going across Main Street through that crossing, the force of the collision knocked a couple of wheels off the tracks. Technically (the train) is still upright, but technically it is considered a derailment."
Arky said that there were no injuries to any riders on the train, but that the individual driving the van was transported to the hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The train will be out of use for the next several hours, Arky said, but there are still transportation lines running.
"Right now, we have a bus bridge in place that is running back and forth between our Central Pointe Station and our stop at 500 East on the S-Line," he said. "There will be an S-Line still operating between 500 East and Fairmont. … There's traffic still going on between Fairmont Park and 500 East."
