RIVERDALE — A 47-year-old man working with a landscaping crew was killed Thursday when the lawn mower he was riding tumbled over a steep terrace.

Police were called about noon to a report of a person who suffered an undisclosed serious injury, said Riverdale Assistant Police Chief Casey Warren. The first arriving officers, however, found the victim deceased and quickly pieced together what had happened.

Warren said the man was on a riding mower along the edge of a terrace made of boulders when the mower went over the edge. It was not immediately known how far the man and lawn mower tumbled.

The assistant chief called the event a "tragedy." The name of the man has not yet been released.
