SANDY — Chivas de Guadalajara defeated fellow Mexican side Santos Laguna 3-1 in a friendly at Rio Tinto Stadium Wednesday as part of Chivas' summer "Tour Rebano."

The match marked the second summer in a row that Liga MX clubs have squared off at Rio Tinto, with Santos and America visiting Sandy on July 4.

The event was a collaboration between Liga MX, Real Salt Lake and the Utah Sports Commission. The friendly drew fans from all over the country and continent to the state, with banners from New York and Los Angeles seen in the supporters section.

It was an all-day extravaganza, with a "fan fest" outside the stadium beginning at 3 p.m., featuring Chivas club legend Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista, who also had a stint with MLS side Chiva USA in 2014 before the club's closure.

Bautista was recognized at midfield before the match, with a highlight reel from his time with Chivas from 2004-07 playing on the video board. Utah State Senator and Mexico native Luz Escamilla presented Bautista with a jacket commemorating the team's stop in Sandy.

Chivas got the scoring started in the 27th minute when Antonio Briseno headed home a cross off of a free kick. The rojiblancos almost had a second one immediately after on an acrobatic finish in the box from Angel Zaldivar, but the shot went just wide of the far post.

The first half came to a close without much in the way of chances for Santos, while Chivas dominated possession and attack opportunities.

The advantage didn't last long, however, as Santos fired back in the 52nd minute with a goal from Doria off of a free kick. Chivas players pleaded for a hand ball in the box but the goal stood to level the match at 1-1.

Tempers flared a bit when the first yellow card was given to Chivas in the 66th minute, with a brief shoving match breaking out between players. Keeper and captain Carlos Acevedo came up with a big save for Santos in the 69th minute on a point-blank shot in the box from Chivas to keep the match level.

The scales tipped back in Chivas' favor in the 73rd minute when a penalty was awarded and Jose Juan Macias slotted it home to give the rojiblancos a 2-1 lead in the final 15 minutes of the match. Macias capitalized, once again, on a chance in the box just minutes later to give Chivas a 3-1 lead in the 78th minute.

Chivas continues its Tour Rebano in the U.S. with a match in Chicago on June 18 against another Liga MX side, Atlas, who finished in the top three this season.
