SALT LAKE CITY — A water main break in Salt Lake City has caused significant damage to at least two homes and created a 7-foot sinkhole that swallowed one vehicle, according to Salt Lake City fire crews.

The break was reported about 4:30 a.m. near 1300 South and 750 West. The fire department shared a video of a car nose down in a significant amount of water similar to a river.

The water line break happened in the street near a sidewalk next to two homes, according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department. The size of the line that broke was still unknown Tuesday morning. But a significant amount of water flooded the yards of two homes and went into the houses. Everyone inside, including pets, were able to get out safely.

Two additional homes further to the east of the break suffered minor damage. The water was turned off about 5 a.m. Salt Lake City Public Utilities department said the whole block of 700 to 800 West was without water Tuesday, unknown when it could be restored, as crews were draining the hole and removing the sunken vehicle.

The public is being asked to avoid 1300 South between 700 West and 900 West. The road is expected to be closed, and water turned off to residents in the area for several hours.
