SALT LAKE CITY — A man is in custody after police say he attempted to kidnap a 23-month-old child from University of Utah Hospital on Monday afternoon.

Ishjon Oquiran Hawkins, 34, who is the noncustodial father of the child, is accused of abducting the child from the mother at the hospital at around 5:05 p.m. and fleeing by foot, carrying the infant, according to University of Utah Police. Hawkins and the child were located minutes later through the use of surveillance video, police said.

"We used video surveillance to determine how Ishjon left the hospital," University of Utah Police Lt. Heather Sturzenegger said. "Detectives responded to check an address for Ishjon and located him in the area with the child in a stroller. He was taken into custody without incident. The child was fine and returned to his mother."

The incident remains under investigation.
