FARMINGTON — Crooks and cars are not a good combo, but recently, have been more common in Davis County.
"In March of this year, we have seen 22 vehicle break-ins. That is on track to exceed last year's numbers," said Davis County sheriff's spokeswoman Stephanie Dinsmore.
The Davis County Sheriff's Office serves Fruit Heights, South Weber and West Point.
Last year, people in those communities reported more than 150 vehicle break-ins. This year, Davis County says it's seeing very few "smash and grab" incidents, which means the majority of car burglaries are coming from unlocked vehicles.
"Guns happened to be one of the biggest things taken from these unlocked vehicles. … We've also seen coins that were taken from a vehicle, extremely old cellphones; things that you wouldn't find value in, but they somehow do," said Dinsmore.
Dave Forsberg, a Farmington resident, says he's heard of cars and homes getting broken into, and he's not taking any extra chances of being the next target.
"You got to stay safe. Put cameras up. Motion detection," said Forsberg. On his street, many neighbors have also installed security cameras.
Dinsmore reminds the public that a camera alone isn't enough. "There's that misconception I'm safe because I have a Ring security camera. You are not safe if you have that. … You need to lock your vehicles," said Dinsmore.
