AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods is back. The five-time Masters champion shot a 1-under 71 in his first competitive round since a devastating car wreck 14 months ago that could've cost him his right leg. Woods walked with the slightest hint of a limp, and he couldn't quite bend over to read putts on the tricky greens at Augusta National. Otherwise, there was nothing to indicate that Woods' career seemed over after his wreck in February 2021. With brilliant touch around the greens, Woods made three birdies, two bogeys and a bunch of solid pars to defy all expectations except his own.
UNDATED (AP) — The Pirates and 25-year-old third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes have come to terms on a new eight-year, $70 million deal pending a physical. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement isn't expected until the team's home opener on April 12. Hayes batted third in Pittsburgh's season opener in St. Louis today but left with an apparent injury in the first inning to his left hand or wrist. He was limited to 96 games last year due to a left wrist injury.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Max Scherzer says he is "good to go" for his New York Mets debut in Friday's second game of the season against the Washington Nationals. This is Scherzer's return to Nationals Park after he played 6 1/2 seasons with Washington and helped the club win the 2019 World Series. The three-time Cy Young Award winner developed a problem with his right hamstring late in spring training camp in Florida and there had been some uncertainty about when he would be able to make his first appearance of the regular season. Fellow Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom is sidelined for at least a month or two because of a shoulder blade issue.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson is stepping down after 19 seasons on the job. The team announced Joe Will remains interim GM until a full-time replacement can be found. Will has been running the team's hockey operations since Wilson went on medical leave in late November. Owner Hasso Plattner says there will be an extensive search for the Sharks' next GM. San Jose made the playoffs 14 times with Wilson in charge and reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2016.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The mother of a boy accidentally hit in the head with a baseball thrown by a Los Angeles Angels pitcher warming up before a game has filed a lawsuit against the team. Beatrice Galaz says in the lawsuit announced Thursday that the team's negligence led to the traumatic brain injury suffered by her then-6-year-old son at Angel Stadium in September 2019. Lawyers say the boy was walking in the stands before a game when he was struck by a ball that a pitcher threw to a teammate who missed the catch. The lawsuit was announced on opening day for Major League Baseball and ahead of the Angels home opener against the Houston Astros.
