NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has finalized the rules change to bring back automatic runners in extra innings for a third straight season. MLB and the players' association agreed to keep the controversial rule that starts each team with a runner on second base during extra innings for the 2022 regular season. The agreement regarding on-field rules modifications also includes expanding active rosters from 26 players to 28 from opening day on April 7 through May 1 this year, due to the delayed start of spring training.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers pitcher José Ureña has signed a $1.25 million, one-year league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 30-year-old Ureña went 4-8 with a 5.81 ERA for the Tigers last season in 26 appearances, including 18 starts. The right-hander had 67 strikeouts and 42 walks in 100 2/3 innings. He owns a 36-54 career record with a 4.77 ERA and 473 strikeouts and 250 walks in 697 2/3 innings. Ureña pitched for the Marlins from 2015-20.
UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Royals exercised their club option on Mike Matheny (muh-THEE'-nee) for the 2023 season. The move eliminates any uncertainty over whether their manager will remain with the club after the coming season. Matheny is entering his third season with the Royals, which includes the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season and his first 162-game run as the manager last season. He is 100-122 with Kansas City and 691-596 overall. That includes seven seasons as the manager of the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Linebacker Bobby Wagner has agreed to a five-year deal to join his hometown Los Angeles Rams. The Super Bowl champions announced the deal Thursday for Wagner, who became one of the NFL's top linebackers during a decade with the Seattle Seahawks. ESPN reported Wagner's deal is worth $50 million. The Seahawks released the six-time All-Pro anchor of their defense on March 9. Just over three weeks later, Wagner agreed to join their NFC West rivals, providing the force at inside linebacker that the Rams have lacked for several seasons. Wagner was born in Los Angeles, and he graduated from high school in suburban Ontario, California.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame freshman guard Blake Wesley has announced he's entering the NBA Draft. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged a team-leading 14.4 points for his hometown Fighting Irish. Wesley was an Indiana All-Star at Riley High School and Notre Dame's first South Bend public school basketball prospect since 1985. Wesley was the only freshman in a starting lineup dominated by seniors and grad students at Notre Dame, which finished with a 24-11 record. That included going 15-5, along with North Carolina, as runners-up to Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season champion Duke. The draft will be held June 23 at the Barclays Center in New York.
