Utah officials report 11 new COVID deaths, decreasing case numbers

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported 11 additional COVID-19 deaths on Friday, along with 1,791 new coronavirus cases.

The rolling, seven-day average for new positive tests has been decreasing and is now at 1,811 cases per day. The seven-day average for positive tests is also on a downward trend and is currently at 32.8%.

The health department reported another 5,534 people who were tested.

In Utah, 4,889,214 doses of vaccine have been administered. The Utah Department of Health reports that 74.1% of Utahns over 5 have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, 65.4% are considered fully vaccinated and 31.9% have received at least one booster dose.

There have been a total of 181,791 breakthrough infections among vaccinated people in Utah. Since vaccines became available, 311,532 unvaccinated people have also contracted COVID-19.

Since Feb. 1, 2021, Utahns who are not vaccinated have had a 1.5 times greater risk of contracting COVID-19, a 4.1 times greater risk of hospitalization from the disease and a 6.5 times greater risk of dying from it.

In the last four weeks, during a surge of omicron variant cases in Utah, unvaccinated individuals have had a 2.4 times greater risk of contracting COVID-19, a 4.5 times greater risk of hospitalization and a 8.7 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19.

Currently, 634 people are hospitalized throughout the state with COVID-19, with 158 of those patients in intensive care units, according to the health department.

School children account for 243 of the new cases reported on Friday. Of those cases, 109 were children between the ages of 5 and 10, 47 were children ages 11-13, and 87 were children ages 14-17.

The latest deaths include:

  • A Washington County woman older than 85, who was hospitalized when she died.
  • A Cache County man, 45-64, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County woman, 65-84, unknown if hospitalized.
  • A Washington County man, over 85, resident of a long-term care facility.
  • A Utah County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County man, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County man, over 85, not hospitalized.
  • A Duchesne County man, 45-64, hospitalized.
  • A Cache County man, over 85, resident of a long-term care facility.
  • A Utah County man, over 85, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County woman, over 85, not hospitalized.
