"When we hear fire, our hearts jump. When we hear it's two alarms, our hearts sink."
Those words by the Granite District's Randy Ripplinger definitley sum up how everyone felt at the scene of the fire this morning at Gearld L. Wright Elementary School in West Valley. After the fire at Wasatch Jr High, it has to be scary to hear of a fire at a school. They all said thank goodness this one was outside the building, and no students or teachers were inside.
It's weird when you get to a scene -- your heart's pumping, you're running around trying to get information and soundbites to quickly get on the air and update everyone on the breaking news. But everyone else is running around trying to do their jobs, too. The principal and I were trying to talk to each other across the lawn as we ran different ways at 7:20. I shouted questions, she answered as she rounded up teachers. That's why my voice may have been shaky during the 7:30 newscast -- I had just run back to the truck and couldn't catch my breath!
