SAMAK, Summit County — A Delaware woman died in a snowmobile crash Sunday in the Soapstone area near Samak.
Summit County search and rescue crews and park rangers were called to the area early Sunday afternoon after 911 dispatchers received calls for help.
First responders later found that the woman — identified as Cecilia Ireland, 67 — was in the area riding snowmobiles with her husband. The two were on separate snowmobiles when Ireland apparently drove off the trail and went down a steep incline before hitting a tree, according to a statement from Utah Division of State Parks.
Though she was wearing a helmet, Ireland suffered serious injuries. Her husband called 911 and helped search and rescue crews find her, but the woman died at the scene.
"Our thoughts go out the Cecilia Ireland's friends and family impacted by this tragedy," the state parks department said.
The crash is still under investigation. The department also encouraged everyone to wear helmets when driving any off-highway vehicles, including snowmobiles, as well as taking the appropriate education courses and riding within one's skill set.
