ROY — More than five years after the death of an infant in Roy, police now say they have enough evidence to make an arrest in the case.
Jordan Sasaki was booked into the Weber County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of murder and obstruction of justice, according to a statement from the Roy Police Department. Sasaki was arrested by a U.S. Marshals Service task force earlier in the day. No formal criminal charges have been filed against him as of Thursday.
Sasaki was arrested in connection with the killing of 14-month-old Genesis McCall, who was found dead in a Roy home along 3100 West in October 2016.
FIrst responders were sent to the home after the child was unresponsive and not breathing, supposedly due to a fall the day before. However, those at the scene "did not believe that the injuries were consistent with that story," according to a search warrant filed in 2016.
The infant was rushed to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, where she later died. Doctors told police that the child had bruising and bite marks on her cheeks. Doctors also noticed bruises on her neck that were consistent with strangulation, according to the warrant. The search warrant included the collection of DNA samples from the infant's mother, the mother's boyfriend and the mother's foster father.
"At the time of the initial investigation there was not enough evidence for criminal charges," Roy police said, but added that after years of investigation, the they now believe they have enough probable cause to make an arrest.
Sasaki is being held without bond.
