CLUTCHTOWN ELEMENTARY — Basketball has produced some of the most memorable clutch moments in sports history.
You know those moments: The clock is ticking down to zero and everyone holds their breath as the player with the ball heaves an orange sphere seemingly toward the heavens in a last-ditch effort to win the game.
Some prayers are answered — like Teresa Weatherspoon's half-court lob in the 1999 WNBA Finals, while others like Gordon Hayward's 2010 NCAA Championship attempt fall short in the agony of defeat.
While titles are great and all, they might not mean much to a third grader — well, at least not when compared to the prospects of getting hot chocolate ahead of a "frigid" final week of school before the holiday break. Who wouldn't want a free cup of hot chocolate in that scenario?
Those were the stakes when Ms. Fitz lined up for an elementary school-style full-court shot at Holy Trinity School Georgetown in Washington, D.C. She reportedly promised her students hot chocolate if she sank the shot.
As you can see in this video posted by the school, Ms. Fitz gets a nice assist from Rudolph — or at least a student that appears to be dressed up as a reindeer. She takes a couple of steps and slings the ball toward a distant hoop.
It's clear from her follow through that she knows this is going in, almost as if she had scheduled recess to be held at Dame Time. The students immediately fall about as silent as Portland Trailblazers fans when Damian Lillard's playoff game-winner sailed through the air in 2019.
And sure enough, Ms. Fitz hits nothing but net. Her shot results in a championship-caliber celebration between her and her students.
Teacher. of. the. year.
Even the pros may have to admit they've been taken to school with this clutch shot.
