OREM — A man was shot and killed by police late Sunday after investigators say he attacked his father with a knife and charged at officers.

At 10:46 p.m., a caller told dispatchers the 41-year-old son was in a domestic dispute with his father, 68, at a home in the area of 1100 South and 50 East, Orem police said in a statement.

The caller told police the son had cut his father and then ran away, according to the statement. Officers arrived and treated the man, who had been cut in the neck.

Police from Orem and surrounding agencies also began searching for the son, who was found soon after near the home, police said.

"Officers attempted to take the male into custody, but he was not compliant," according to the statement.

The man then "charged" at officers with weapons in both hands, police said, and shots were fired by at least one officer. Police did not disclose what kinds of weapons the man was holding.

Police said they gave him medical attention but he died on scene.

The father was taken to a hospital, but police did not know his condition as of Monday morning.

The Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating. The officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting, police said.

Additional information about what might have caused the argument between the father and son was not released.
