Combined cold temperatures and wet roads made for icy conditions overnight on some of Utah's roads.
It doesn't look like a lot of snow, or at least enough to cause a lot of damage. But when the temperatures dropped last night, yesterday's winter storm caused some major problems for Utah drivers.
Just after 9:30 last night, the Utah Highway Patrol responded to a nine-car pileup at about 3500 South and Interstate 15.
Several people suffered minor injuries but only one person was transported to the hospital. UHP says a driver speeding hit a patch of ice and lost control of the vehicle.
Sgt. Rudy Taylor said, "The roads may appear dry, but they are not. Particularly right now, the HOV lane and every on ramp and off ramp is iced over. The Department of Transportation is doing its best to get salt trucks on scene and get those things taken care of."
Legacy Highway was another trouble spot last night. It was shut down because of ice on the road. It has since been re-opened.
Earlier snow made for slippery roads in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons, as well. The driver of an SUV hit an ice patch and slid off into the river. That driver was able to get out with only a few scratches.
Those are just a few of the 50-plus accidents caused by winter conditions in Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah counties.
Snow plows and salt trucks have been out on the roads all night, but there are still icy spots this morning. UHP asks us to remind drivers as they are heading out this morning to be careful and not assume the roads are dry.
