LAYTON — A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized in serious condition Tuesday after being hit by a car while walking to Layton High School.

The incident happened just after 7 a.m. The student walking to the high school, 440 Wasatch Drive, was crossing Wasatch near 200 North when she was hit by two vehicles, said Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman.

The girl was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital in serious condition and later flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City for additional treatment, he said.

Lyman said the area was dark and there was rain at the time of the crash. He said the incident happened near the entrance of the school where traffic gets congested in the morning. Determining whether the girl was in a crosswalk will be part of the investigation, he said. As of Tuesday, no drivers had been cited.

The north lanes of Wasatch were closed for approximately two hours while police investigated the incident.

The student's name has not been released.

In 2016, a 17-year-old girl was hit and killed while in a crosswalk while walking to Layton High School. That crash happened at the other entrance of the school at 199 N. Fort Lane.
