HYRUM, Cache County — The Bear River Health Department issued a warning that E. coli levels at Hyrum Reservoir surpass safe levels for swimming and recreating.
On Thursday, Aug. 26, samples taken from the day use area, located within Utah's Hyrum Lake State Park, contained E. coli levels of 613.1 MPN/100 milliliters, well above the Utah Department of Health recommended warning advisory threshold of 235 MPN/100 milliliters.
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality urges recreators not to swim, boat, water ski or jet-ski in water that appears to have a harmful algal bloom.
"These activities can cause toxins to become airborne, increasing the likelihood you will inhale them," the department says.
Children also shouldn't play at a lake when there's scum in the water or around the shore.
