SANDY — Three people were injured, one critically, in a drive-by shooting at a Sandy apartment complex on Tuesday.
Police were notified about 4:25 a.m. by employees at a local hospital that two men, ages 20 and 18, and a 13-year-old boy had been shot and they either drove themselves to the hospital or were dropped off by a friend.
The 20-year-old was shot twice, in the chest and thigh, and was in critical condition Tuesday morning, said Sandy Police Sgt. Clayton Swensen. The 18-year-old was shot in the ankle and the 13-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to one of his hands, he said.
Detectives were able to determine that the shooting occurred near 8575 South and 300 East in the rear of an apartment complex. The three victims were believed to be standing outside when a person or several people in a car fired shots at them, according to police.
At least six rounds were fired. Two of the shots went through the window of a nearby apartment, narrowly missing a tenant who was asleep in bed, Swensen said.
The two adult victims live at the apartment complex while the boy lives in Midvale, he said. What prompted the shooting was still under investigation Tuesday, including whether there are any gang connections, Swensen said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police at 801-799-3000.
