MURRAY — Southbound I-15 was closed at 5300 South due to a fatal crash on Monday morning.
Just before 4 a.m., Monday, a Hyundai Accent was southbound in the area, and for an unknown reason the car went off the right side of the road and collided with the concrete barrier, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden. The car then went back to the left, crossing all traffic lanes and hitting the barrier on the left side of the highway.
The only occupant of the car, an 18-year-old man, was transported to a hospital but later died from his injuries, according to the highway patrol. The man's name has not yet been released.
He was not wearing a seat belt, and troopers are investigating impairment and reckless driving as possible factors in the crash, according to the UHP.
As of 9:20 a.m., all lanes of I-15 reopened in the area, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
