LAYTON — A 77-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday after an accidental explosion in a home's garage near Nayon Drive and South Lisa Street in Layton, fire officials said.
The man was in the garage of the home when the explosion occurred, and he sustained serious injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, according to Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook. He did not give the exact address of the home.
The man was flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital with trauma and burn injuries, Cook said.
Officials responded to the scene after dispatch received several 911 calls reporting an explosion with a large amount of smoke, Cook said. Responders determined the explosion was in the garage and reported no fire.
The explosion caused structural damage to the home, according to Cook. Davis County Sheriff's Office's explosive ordnance disposal experts also responded to the scene. The cause of the explosion appeared to be an accidental stray spark hitting combustible material while welding, according to Layton police.
The area around Nayon Drive and South Lisa Street was closed while Layton police investigated the cause, according to a tweet.
The identity of the injured man was not released.
