LAYTON — A woman was arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with a grass fire near Layton Hills Mall on Friday, according to Layton Fire Department.

Officials believe the woman was responsible for sparking the fire and are working to determine whether she did so intentionally or through negligence, Layton Fire Department Battalion Chief Jason Cook said.

Fire crews responded to the mall about 3:30 p.m. to find tall flames encompassing hedges along I-15. The decorative hedges produced a "spectacular fire" with tall flames and smoke, Cook said.

The structure of the hedges paired with the heat and drought made them excellent fuel for the fire, he added.

Fire crews were able to get the flames tamped out in approximately 45 minutes and stayed on the scene for another hour to make sure the flames didn't reignite.

The grass fire briefly affected the roadway on northbound I-15 at Hill Field Road, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. The right lane of northbound 1-15 was closed for a short time until the flames were put out.

No property damage or injuries were reported, according to Cook.
