KEARNS — A Draper man was charged Friday with shooting and killing a man in Kearns after confronting him about some kind of payment dispute.

James Tom Hollingshead, 58, is charged in 3rd District Court with murder and two counts of discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, both first-degree felonies; obstructing justice, a second-degree felony; and possession of a gun by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.

Unified police were called to a report of a shooting on May 20 at 4061 W. 5500 South. They arrived to discover that Paul Jason Adams, 46, had been shot three times, according to charging documents. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

A short time later, Hollingshead called 911 to report the shooting.

Charging documents say Hollingshead had told friends prior to the shooting that he needed to confront Adams "regarding payment for previous work." The two men initially met while in their vehicles and talked.

At some point, Adams approached the driver's side window of Hollingshead's vehicle and said "that he was going to punch him in the throat and be done with him," the charges state. That's when Hollingshead is accused of shooting him three times in the chest.

Hollingshead then drove to a gas station where he threw away the three shell casings, according to the charges, then called 911, went home and put the gun in his closet.

Hollingshead admitted to being a methamphetamine user but claimed he had not used in several days leading up to the shooting, the charges state.

Prosecutors have requested he be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail.
