RIVERTON — A 81-year-old woman is dead after her car struck a power pole on Thursday afternoon near 12300 South on Redwood Road, said Riverton police.

According to Riverton Police Chief Don Huston, the woman's vehicle was northbound on Redwood Road when witnesses reported seeing the car veer off the road and into a power pole. Huston said that the woman may have veered due to a medical incident.

The woman was declared dead at the scene. The medical examiner's office is investigating whether a medical issue was a contributing factor to the crash, Huston said.

According to Rocky Mountain Power, the car crash caused a power outage for approximately 2,452 customers in Riverton and South Jordan at about 1:30 p.m. The company said that at about 3 p.m., power was restored to all affected customers.

Further information, including the identity of the woman, was not released.
