SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputy working at the jail was injured after being attacked by an inmate on Sunday, according to police.
Fredrick Hidalgo, 32, "became agitated when told he wasn't going to be moved to general population" and placed his arm in the cell door, preventing a deputy from closing it, according to charging documents. The deputy pushed Hidalgo away from the door, who in return pushed the deputy the ground, the charges state.
While the deputy was on the ground, Hidalgo punched him in the face and "grabbed a window squeegee, which had a wooden broom handle attached to it, and hit (the deputy) multiple times in the head," according to the charges.
The deputy was taken to a local hospital where he received 13 staples to close a cut on the top of his head that was 6 to 8 inches long and "bleeding profusely," court documents state.
Hidalgo was charged on Tuesday in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault by a prisoner, a first-degree felony.
It was the second day in a row that Hidalgo was formally charged with assaulting an officer. On Monday, he was charged in 3rd District Court with assaulting another police officer on April 25. In that incident, Salt Lake City police responded to a man allegedly lighting things on fire near 135 South and 800 West. As an officer attempted to stop Hidalgo and question him, Hidalgo punched the officer in the head with a closed first, according to charging documents. He was arrested after being tackled by a fire fighter.
Ten days before that incident, Hidalgo kicked an officer who attempted to arrest him for allegedly hitting car windows, charging documents state. He was charged in 3rd District Court in that incident with another count of assault on a police officer.
