WEST VALLEY CITY — A 12-year-old boy who police say took his grandfather's car on a joyride is now facing serious charges for allegedly hitting an off-duty police officer's vehicle.
West Valley police were called to a residence near 3000 South and 4700 West about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday by a man who said his 12-year-old grandson has taken his car, a Kia Forte, without permission.
While police were gathering information, an off-duty Ogden police officer reported to emergency dispatchers that he was following a reckless driver in a Kia, according to West Valley police.
"The Ogden officer followed the Kia and provided additional updates to dispatch," police said.
When the car entered a dead end street near 4900 South and 700 West, the 12-year-old driver attempted to "ram" the off-duty officer who was driving his personal vehicle, the officer told dispatchers.
"The Ogden officer then decided to box in the Kia and its driver. As the Ogden officer was doing this, several West Valley officers arrived and they were able to quickly place the juvenile under arrest," according to police.
The boy was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of joyriding and aggravated assault.
No injuries were reported.
