SOUTH SALT LAKE — South Salt Lake will soon have faster internet options, with residents and businesses potentially able to sign up for the service by the summer, the city council announced at its Wednesday meeting.

The city entered into an agreement with the company, allowing Google Fiber to provide fast broadband internet as another option to South Salt Lake residents. Google Fiber partners with cities to bring high-speed internet through fiber optic cables, which is faster than traditional cable internet options.

The announcement comes as the city is trying to reach residential youth through an initiative called The City's Promise South Salt Lake, which brings out-of-school activities to area children.

Some families across the city don't have reliable access to the internet, something the city is aiming to solve by providing a higher-speed option.

"Digital equity and inclusion are imperative for resident success. Working with Google Fiber creates new options for broadband access and connectivity in our community," said Mayor Cherie Wood in a statement. "Google Fiber's expansion into South Salt Lake will assist us in addressing the digital divide."

This isn't the first time Google Fiber has partnered with a Utah city. The internet provider is also in Salt Lake City and Provo.
