WOODS CROSS — Two men are in custody Sunday after a high-speed chase that began in a Woods Cross parking lot and ended in West Valley City.
Tucker Riggs, 28, and Julian Nordahl, 26, are being held in the Davis County Jail on suspicion of theft, attempted murder, failure to stop at the command of police, and other counts.
According to Woods Cross Police Chief Chad Soffe and probable cause statements obtained by KSL, the incident began just after 4 a.m. when an officer got out of his car and approached a pickup truck that was leaving the Manheim auto auction location at 1650 W. 500 South.
"They had an exchange," Soffe said. "Shots were fired by my officer." The pickup truck drove away quickly.
The probable cause statement says the officer fired because he "felt his life was in imminent danger."
A second officer spotted the truck getting on Legacy Parkway. "It was pursued by several agencies into the West Valley area," Soffe said. The statement says officers pursued the truck through multiple cities as it traveled up to 80 and 90 mph on highways and city streets.
Every time officers tried to spike the vehicle it turned around, the statement says.
Eventually the truck crashed into a chain link fence near 3405 El Cabrio Dr., the statement says. The driver and passenger were apprehended "without incident," Soffe said.
The statement says Woods Cross, West Bountiful and West Valley officers all assisted during the pursuit and arrest. Soffe said the shooting is under investigation, but said the pickup truck was stolen from Salt Lake City and that there was a loaded handgun in the truck.
