SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Democratic Party on Saturday announced its selection to fill the seat left open by the death of Ogden Rep. LaWanna "Lou" Shurtliff.

Retired obstetrician-gynecologist and U.S. Air Force veteran Dr. Rosemary Lesser will serve in the House District 10 seat after state delegates chose her out of eight candidates, the party said in a statement.

Before her retirement last year, Lesser practiced medicine at the Ogden Women's Clinic, Ogden Regional Medical Center and McKay-Dee Hospital. She served for 15 years as an obstetrician-gynecologist in the Air Force and served surgical missions in Mali, West Africa, according to the Democratic Party.

Lesser has been active in the Weber County Democratic and Utah State Democratic parties, officials said.

"As a veteran and a doctor, Dr. Lesser will be an excellent addition to the Legislature. Her knowledge and expertise have benefitted Weber County for many, many years and she will be of immense value to the people of District 10," Jeff Merchant, chairman of the Utah Democratic Party, said in the statement.

Weber County's lone Democrat, Shurtliff had just been reelected to represent the district before she died after a three-week battle with pneumonia in December.
