OREM — Trey Woodbury picked a great time to make a big statement for Utah Valley men's basketball.
The junior from Las Vegas pulled down a rebound, passed the ball to point guard Blaze Nield, and then drained a stepback 3-pointer — all in the final 14 seconds of overtime — to lead UVU to a 3-0 start to Western Athletic Conference play.
Woodbury had 20 points, five rebounds and seven turnovers — but most importantly, that one 3-pointer with 5 seconds left in overtime to lift the Wolverines to a 93-92 win at Seattle U. in overtime. The former UNLV transfer shot 8-of-12 from 3-point range, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead Utah Valley (5-5, 3-0 WAC).
Fardaws Aimaq, the nation's top rebounder, had 29 points and 14 rebounds to lead Utah Valley, and teammate J.J. Overton added 21 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Evan Cole supplied 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists for the Wolverines, who shot 53% from the field and outrebounded the Redhawks 45-33.

"Trey Woodbury stepping up, finding a crease in the defense, getting his feet set, and knocking down a huge three," Utah Valley coach Mark Madsen said. "We had too many turnovers but we will get better. Fardaws and Evan battling inside to finish with 25 rebounds was huge.
"The mental toughness of Trey Woodbury exceeded everything throughout the game. A couple of things didn't go his way, but he stayed locked in, he stayed ready, and he knocked down a huge shot to win the game."
But UVU was plagued by turnovers — 22 in all, compared to just 11 on Seattle — and the Redhawks turned those takeaways into 32 points to force overtime. When Overton fouled out in the final minute of overtime, the Wolverines needed someone to take the last shot while down two.
Woodbury was more than happy to oblige.
Darrion Trammell had 26 points and seven rebounds to lead Seattle (7-6, 0-1 WAC), and Riley Grigsby added 20 points and three rebounds for the Redhawks.
The Wolverines continue their first road trip of conference play Saturday at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
