SALT LAKE CITY — Two people are in police custody after officials seized a large amount of marijuana and cocaine from a rental car Friday afternoon.
Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office found the car straddling lanes multiples times while driving northbound on I-15, according to a probable cause affidavit. Deputies pulled over the driver, identified as Jose Gomez, 22, of Las Vegas, and he told the deputies that the car was a rental.
While talking to Gomez, one of the deputies noticed Gomez's eyes were bloodshot. Gomez said he had not been drinking or consuming any drugs, but the other deputy noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the passenger side window. The male passenger told the deputies that there was marijuana in the car and showed them three prepackaged joints, two of which had been consumed, according to the affidavit.
Gomez and the passenger were instructed to exit the vehicle while the deputies conducted a search. The deputies found 90 prepackaged raw marijuana joints totaling 180 grams, five jars of THC wax totaling 139.5 grams, 58.3 grams of cocaine, three marijuana joint tubes, a THC vape cartridge and $1,793 in cash, the probable cause statement said.
The two were placed under arrest for possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute. Gomez was booked into Utah County Jail and the passenger was sent to Slate Canyon Youth Center because he is a minor. The rental vehicle was towed.
