WEST VALLEY CITY — A man upset that his car was being impounded responded by throwing rocks through the windows of a nearby Chili's restaurant, according to police.
Tayler James Tresner, 32, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony criminal mischief.
Just before 3 p.m. Thursday, a West Valley police officer was flagged down by Tresner near 3000 South and 5600 West. Tresner said his vehicle had run out of gas and he needed help pushing it out of the road, according to a police affidavit.
But when the officer asked to check his ID, he discovered that Tresner's license was suspended and he did not have auto insurance, according to a police affidavit. The officer informed Trenser that his car was going to be impounded.
"Mr. Tresner became upset and kept stating he had due process for the suspended license and the issue with his insurance," the affidavit states.
After being handed a citation, the officer said that Tresner walked away while saying "something about the car was how he got to work." A short time later, while police were still at the scene, a woman pulled up and told them that Tresner was throwing rocks through the windows of a Chili's Grill and Bar, 3075 S. 5600 West, according to the affidavit.
Police spotted Tresner walking away from the restaurant and placed him under arrest.
"While placing him into my vehicle, Mr. Tresner admitted he broke the windows and stated, 'If I can't work then they can't either.' Mr. Tresner continued making similar comments stating he cannot work without his car and when he gets out, he will do it again," the affidavit states.
A total of seven large windows were broken, according to police. Damage was estimated to be between $5,000 and $8,000.
