ST. GEORGE — The city of St. George said Tuesday it is canceling a number of events and sports tournaments due to the surge in local COVID-19 hospitalizations.

St. George will be canceling several events and sports tournaments after consulting health care providers, according to city communications director David Cordero. The city is temporarily restricting events that bring large numbers of people to its community.

Washington County is currently reporting a 14-day rate of about 660 COVID-19 cases, and a 14-day case count of 1,133 cases, according to government data.

The criteria released Wednesday by city officials for canceling events included hitting one of two thresholds: anticipated participation of 500 or more or a significant amount of participants from outside of the area.

The canceled events include: the Snow Canyon Half Marathon (Nov. 7), the Seegmiller Farm Harvest Days & Turkey Trot (Nov. 21), Kickoff to Christmas & Santa Dash (Nov. 30), among others.

The Skillz and Thrillz Challenge (Nov. 14), which had previously been stated was canceled, will only have an estimated 150 people and will now continue as scheduled, according to city officials on Wednesday.

St. George officials will send out additional updates as needed.
