SALT LAKE CITY — A man who was taken into custody by police after they used less-than-lethal force against him now faces a criminal charge accusing him of threatening officers with two knives.
Bryce Adam Sevy, 32, of Salt Lake City, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with assault on a police officer, a second-degree felony.
On Oct. 8, Salt Lake police were called to the area of 700 S. Redwood Road by a man who said his son was having a "violent psychiatric problem" and that he was armed with a kitchen knife, according to a police affidavit. He said his son, who was on parole, had cut off his ankle monitor and had claimed he "was going to stab people."
When the first officer arrived at the scene, Sevy, 32, holding a knife in each hand, advanced quickly toward the officer, according to charging documents. He then allegedly walked toward a second officer while holding the knives and yelling "shoot me."
The officer got back into his car and backed away to create space between him and Sevy, according to the affidavit. He then waited as backup officers got into position and they attempted to take Sevy into custody by surrounding him and talking to him before using less lethal force.
They used 40 mm less-lethal rounds and a Taser to bring him into custody, the charges state.
Prosecutors have requested that Sevy be held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail.
