SALT LAKE CITY — A registered sex offender was arrested after police say he was caught near a day care center on a college campus.

Jason Aaron Newton, 45, who has a lengthy criminal history and is listed on the Utah Sex Offender and Kidnapping Registry as “noncompliant,” was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, assault on a school employee and being a sex offender in a protected area.

Just after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, South City campus of Salt Lake Community College security made contact with Newton and asked him to leave the campus after receiving complaints from the campus day care, according to a police affidavit.

“Newton refused and told (the officer) he was the one who needed to leave after which time he attempted to strike/assault (the officer) with an approximate 4-foot stick,” the affidavit states.

The officer used his pepper spray on Newton, who then ran off. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper spotted Newton near 1850 S. 200 East and arrested him.

“Because of his sex offender status, Newton should not have been in proximity to the day care children,” according to the affidavit.
