SALT LAKE CITY — A man wanted for parole violation was shot and killed by law enforcement officers after brandishing a gun in Salt Lake City on Thursday evening, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service, West Valley City police and Salt Lake City police responded to the shooting on Thursday, officials said.
The incident occurred about 5:15 p.m. near Fayette Ave., which is between Main Street and West Temple. Officers with the Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team located a man in the area who was wanted by the Utah Department of Corrections Adult Probation and Parole division for absconding, according to a news release from the agency.
When officers located the man, he disobeyed commands to stop and ran away, the release said. Officers then pursued him, both on foot and in vehicles. They also used a police dog to stop him.
When officers approached the man, he drew a firearm, and "officers returned fire and hit the suspect," according to the release. Officers called for medical aid, but the man died on the scene from his injuries.
He was identified Friday as 38-year-old Damien Evans, of West Valley City, according to the release.
The Marshals Service's Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team is made up of 19 state and local law enforcement agencies, according to the release. The agency has not said which agencies were involved in the shooting, or how many officers fired shots at Evans. The release did not provide further details about the shooting.
As per Salt Lake County's protocol for all law enforcement shootings, a multiagency investigations team, led by Unified Police Department, is handling the incident.
