SPANISH FORK CANYON — One person is dead, and six others injured following a car crash in Spanish Fork Canyon.
Utah Highway Patrol said a five-vehicle crash, which included a semitruck, closed both directions of U.S. Highway 6 two miles west of Sheep Creek in Spanish Fork Canyon.
A Department of Public Safety incident report stated that at approximately 4:30 p.m., a double tanker semi driving westbound slowed or stopped entirely. A Dodge pickup truck in the single westbound lane behind the tanker then rear-ended the left corner of the tanker's second trailer and slid into one of the eastbound lanes. An eastbound GMC Yukon then struck the pickup "almost directly on the driver door" and swung into the other eastbound lane upon impact, the report states, and was struck by an eastbound Ford Fusion.
The Dodge pickup truck driver was killed upon impact, the driver of the Yukon and driver of the double tanker semi were both taken via air ambulance to local hospitals with critical injuries, the report says. The Ford Fusion's driver was also transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Dodge was identified Wednesday as Aaron C. Parry, of West Jordan. His age was not known.
The highway patrol confirmed that four others were also in serious condition following the crash.
Additional information on those involved, including their ages and genders, was not immediately available. The cause of the crash is also currently unknown.
Eastbound traffic on U.S. 6 was diverted to state Route 89 at Thistle Junction and the westbound road was closed but both directions have since reopened.
