SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police say they are making progress in the search for a driver who hit another vehicle in June, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old passenger.
After the crash, the male driver ran away, but he left behind an assortment of drug-related items in his car, according to newly unsealed search warrant affidavits.
On June 21, just before 7 a.m., a GMC Sierra going “very fast” ran a red light at the intersection of Redwood Road and North Temple and struck the passenger side door of a 2003 Nissan Sentra, the affidavit states.
A 17-year-old boy in the Nissan was taken to a local hospital in extremely critical condition. He died on June 29 after remaining in a coma for eight days, according to the affidavit. Salt Lake police have not released the boy's name.
After the crash, witnesses told police that the man driving the GMC grabbed a bag and ran, the warrant states.
The vehicle was seized and impounded by police. During a search of the vehicle, police found a handgun reported stolen out of West Jordan, marijuana plants, heroin, Suboxone, “a duffle bag containing a large quantity of small zip-lock bags and rubber bands,” and two bullet casings in the center console, according to the warrant.
The vehicle was processed for DNA evidence.
