This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

David Young is a marketing developer for Taco Del Mar, a food chain with outlets in Canada and the United States. His organization decided to start a new venture, Slo Joe's Backyard BBQ. It became David's responsibility to sell the new franchise. He decided it was such a promising venture that he and his wife, Erika, started their own outlet.

Slo Joe's Backyard BBQ is located at 1842 S. 300 West in Salt Lake City. I know that many businesses pick a location because of visibility and traffic count, and I'm sure this was a factor in Dave and Erika's decision. Slo Joe's is ideally located between three retail giants: Costco, Sam's Club and Home Depot.

The Youngs opened this test store in September 2007. Slo Joe's features barbecue sandwiches such as Pulled Pork, Pulled Chicken, Pulled Beef Brisket and Hotlink. I enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich and the macaroni and cheese side. Other sides offered include cole slaw, potato salad, mashed potatoes, barbecue-baked beans, corn salad and tomato cucumber salad. Diners can also enjoy a barbecue-baked potato topped with pulled pork or brisket, cheddar cheese, butter, sour cream and chives. Erika tells me the meats are slow cooked for 10 hours using only the finest ingredients.

A Taco Del Mar shares the building, parking lot and soft drink machine, which provides greater selection. If someone in your party wants barbecue while another wants Mexican, it's simple to order separately at different counters but to sit and eat together.

Most of Slo Joe's Backyard BBQ lunch business comes from the business community while the evening is more family-oriented. Prices at Slo Joe's BBQ are reasonable and Erika says that economic concerns are encouraging families to find cost effective places to eat out that will fit the family's budget. She feels Slo Joe's fits that requirement. The restaurant's hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
