Many of those less fortunate were able to get a hot meal today thanks to hundreds of Utah volunteers who teamed up with the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels for Thanksgiving.
Delivering meals on Thanksgiving has really become a tradition for a number of Utah families. We tagged along with one family today that says they cherish the opportunity to give back.
It all starts in the kitchen: nine days of preparing and cooking; more than 600 meals hot and ready to go.
"You know, it feels really good," volunteer Carrie Savage said.
The Savage family makes up a small group of the 250 volunteers that showed up at the Salvation Army today. But one door at a time, they did their part to take care of the hungry and those unable to provide their own holiday dinner.
Most of the food comes from community donations. Together, the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels coordinate where the dinners are taken. The volunteers do the rest.
"Some have come year after year. I was talking with a gentleman just a minute ago that this is his 10th year coming down," said Major James Sullivan, with the Salvation Army.
Savage said, "We're so blessed. We have a beautiful family to have Thanksgiving dinner with today with lots of wonderful food, and it just seems like it's important to help other people have the same kind of holiday."
The Savage family says delivering the meal is just part of the experience. Giving a smile and showing that somebody cares is what Thanksgiving is all about.
"It felt good, because you're helping a lot of people that they sometimes don't have a lot of company, and sometimes they just can't go outside of their house," Mikey Savage said.
Morgan Savage said, "We hope they have a good Thanksgiving."
Charitable organizations are hoping the giving continues. The demand for many of these services has increased this year. For information on how you can donate, CLICK HERE.
