PAWLING, N.Y., Sep 13, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- William B. Ziff Jr., the former head of the Ziff-Davis publishing empire, has died at his Pawling, N.Y., home of prostate cancer.

Ziff, who died Saturday, was 76 years old, CNET News.com reported.

He inherited the Ziff-Davis publishing company from his father, William B. Ziff Sr. and added such popular publications as Car & Driver, Yachting, Popular Photography, Backpacker and Modern Bride to the portfolio.

In the 1980s, Ziff-Davis launched Computer Gaming World, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Expert Gamer, PC/Computer, PC Week, PC Magazine and ZDNet, now owned by CNET Networks.

In 1994 he sold 95 percent of his family's share in Ziff-Davis for $1.4 billion.

He is survived by his wife, Tamsen Ann, their sons, Daniel, Dirk and Robert and four grandchildren.
