It was a sold-out stadium at Rice-Eccles tonight. Thousands donned blue or red and braved the cold to watch another chapter in the historic rivalry.

There are so-so seats, and then there are the great ones. And that's where we went tonight. There was a sea of blue and sea of red and, at some point, the two had to meet.

Those were seats that came with responsibilities. BYU fan Robert Campbell said, "The Ute fans have been a little bit cranky."

Fans were dishing it out and taking it all in good spirit. Utah fan Tom McNamee said, "We can watch them all cry and go home to Provo." Ken Garner, also a Utah fan, said, "We can cheer and out cheer these guys."

BYU Fan Jake Farnsworth disagreed. He said, "It's to no avail. Cougars are going to win."

And sometimes the best seats in the house are outside the stadium: with food. Osvelia Castillo said, "Potato salad, everything else is gone. We got here too late."

"It's almost more fun to be at the tailgate than at the game, said Utah fan Rob Eggen.

A family of tailgaters has turned their tent into a tradition, and there are conflicting loyalties. It's something brothers-in-law Spencer Ferguson, a BYU Fan, and Eggen, a Utah fan have come to terms with. They said it created a problem just one day a year.

And then there's the matter of a friendly little wager between the mayors of Salt Lake City and Provo. Be looking for Provo Mayor Lewis Billings on a bike ride to Salt Lake's City Hall, carrying a donation for the Utah Food Bank on his back. There was talk of bringing a big fat check, instead of cans.
