A Salt Lake man now faces a list of serious charges after police arrested him for stealing 120 catalytic converters from cars.
Randy J. Vantienderen is charged in the theft of 18 catalytic converters from cars parked in TRAX parking lots over the past five months.
Deputy District Attorney Fred Burmester says Utah Transit Authority police caught him in the act during one theft. A working group of police agencies and recyclers helped them link him to other alleged crimes.
He also admitted he sold 120 catalytic converters total the recycling, and admitted that he stole all that too," Burmester said.
Prosecutors say he was taking a big risk for a relatively minimal return. Now Vantienderen is facing about three dozen felony and misdemeanor charges.
