Gene Kennedy ReportingThe south end of Bangerter Highway is reopened after a violent collision between a car and horse. Westbound Bangerter was closed between Redwood Road and 2700 West.

Around 4 am authorities began receiving calls about a horse on Bangerter Highway. By the time deputies arrived, there had been an accident.

Sgt. Rex Mulholland/SL Co. Sheriff's Dept: "The vehicle hit the horse, and carried it a short distance. The horse rolled off the vehicle until the vehicle came to a rest."

Part of the horse actually went inside the car. The rest of the animal went over it.

Deputies says there's no way the driver could have seen it coming.

The horse is dead. The driver, who was the only person in the car, was flown by helicopter to LDS Hospital in critical condition. Crews had to cut the roof off of his car to get him out.

It took crews a couple of hours to clean up the mess and reopen the highway.

Investigators think the horse came from private property near Bangerter Highway and 2700 West.
