Utah has a new federal judge. The investiture ceremony for Clark Waddoups was held at the federal courthouse today.

Waddoups is an experienced trial lawyer who's practiced law in Utah for more than 20 years. He was a partner with "Parr, Waddoups, Brown, Gee & Loveless," one of Utah's largest firms.

Today he became one of eight federal judges for the District of Utah. Originally from Idaho, Judge Waddoups attended law school at the University of Utah.

Early in his career he was a law clerk for a judge in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He then practiced for a large law firm in California for seven years before coming back to Utah in the early 80s. He said, "I commit to you that I will do my best to see that the integrity of the court system is maintained and that justice is dispensed as fairly and as evenly as it can."

Sen. Orrin Hatch said, "I do want to emphasize that the resistance to confirming any judges this year makes all the more remarkable the fact that Clark was approved by the judiciary committee and confirmed by the United States Senate without a single negative vote, without a single negative comment."

Hatch was among the speakers at today's ceremony and was instrumental in the nomination process.

Judge Waddoups was appointed by President Bush on Oct. 21. He was sworn in as Utah's 15th U.S. District Court judge, and he replaces Judge Paul Cassell who resigned.
