California is still waiting on final results of the hotly contested Proposition 8.
With 92 percent of precincts reporting, 52 percent voted in support of the gay marriage ban with 48 percent voting against it. That's roughly 300,000 votes separating the two sides. If passed, the measure would overturn a California Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage.
Opponents say the measure supports discrimination. Supporters argue it protects the sacred definition of marriage. Both sides have raised more than $70 million, making Proposition 8 the most expensive social issue race in U.S. history.
Though the measure affects voters in California, it is closely watched here in Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has openly supported the proposition.
On Election Day, activists on both sides held honk-and-wave events. Some waited outside voting locations.
