FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- More than 10,000 Davis County taxpayers were sent incorrect property tax notices.

County treasurer Mark Altom says the error stems from reductions in the North Davis Fire District certified tax rate.

Since July, the district has made two reductions to the tax rate. The county calculated taxes based only on the first rate reduction.

The problem was spotted by taxpayers who noticed discrepancies on their tax notices.

Some 10,060 taxpayers from West Point and Clearfield were affected. Of those, 331 were overcharged by $5 or more. The county will send corrected tax notices to those residents.

The remaining 9,729 taxpayers were overcharged in amounts of $5 or less. Altom says they'll get a postcard notice of the error and the amounts will be credited on 2009 tax bills.
