BEIJING, Sep 04, 2006 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- HarperCollins Publishers, the wholly-owned subsidiary of News Corporation, has revealed that it has set up China Desk to further explore the Chinese book market, one of its key targets.

HarperCollins is planning to import more and more books from China. HarperCollins will, in the near future, cooperate with the People's Literature Publishing House to publish about 50 kinds of Chinese literature classics in 5 years.

Restricted by publication acts and rules, there exists serious unbalance between book import and book export. It's time for Chinese publishers and presses to consider exporting more works to foreign countries. The volume of trading of HarperCollins in Chinese book market is about USD 1 million, quite a small amount compared to its total sales revenue of USD 1.5 billion in 2005. But this figure is expected to reach USD 5 million in a short period of time.

The establishment of China Desk is the first step for HarperCollins to expand book market in China. With gradual acquaintance with the need of Chinese readers and characteristic of Chinese book market, HarperCollins will, for sure, become greater and stronger in China.
