PROVO — A Santaquin woman who was shot by police after allegedly pointing a gun at police officers was struck four times, according to court documents.
Just after 7 p.m. on June 4, emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman who claimed there was a woman with a gun “acting erratic” at Utah Lake State Park in west Provo.
Police later determined that the woman who called 911 was the same woman who confronted officers and was then shot, according to a search warrant affidavit.
Provo police arrived in the area, found the vehicle in question and parked behind it.
“A female exited the red vehicle and was holding a handgun. The female was waving the handgun and advancing toward the officers. The officers gave the female commands to ‘drop the weapon.’ The female continued advancing towards the officers and pointed the handgun at them. Three Provo officers fired their department-issued weapons, striking the female four times,” according to the warrant.
Officers immediately provided first aid to the 20-year-old woman. She was taken to Utah Valley Hospital where she underwent surgery. The woman's injuries were determined not to be life-threatening.
“It is believed that (the woman) was suicidal and trying to commit suicide by cop and/or may be under the influence of a controlled substance, prescription drugs or alcohol,” the affidavit says.
Provo Police Chief Rich Ferguson said on the day of the shooting that his officers were shaken.
“No officer wants to be confronted with this kind of situation,” he said.
As of Thursday, no criminal charges have been filed against Bryanna Ellyn Hammond.
An update on the investigation posted last week by the Provo Police Department said the police body camera video would not be released at this time.
“The involved individual is experiencing significant medical and emotional challenges and due to this, the body camera footage has yet to be released,” according to the statement.
The Utah County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting.
